The Milky Way over Mt. Ritter, Ansel Adams Wilderness
I organized a 6-day backpacking trip with some friends on the John Muir Trail from Mammoth Lakes to Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite at the beginning of August. We were out there for 6 days and hiked 40+ miles through the area named after the world-famous photographer, Ansel Adams. From talking to people we've met on the trail, it seemed that a lot of hikers only spend about 2-3 days in this section of the John Muir Trail. The friends who went with me on this trip are all photographers and truly appreciated the slower pace and were able to take in as much as we could from the area.
Every night on the trip we had perfectly clear skies with the milky way visible just above us. Regardless of the thunderstorms that happen all over the Sierra Nevada Range during the day, once the sun went down, the clouds cleared away and we had 6 nights of this amazing night sky.
