About a 4-5 hour drive from Manila, we spent the night at Potipot Gateway Resort in Candelaria Zambales. Potipot Gateway Resort give you the island charm with modern conveniences (Comfortable beds, flat screen TV, A/C, etc) as well as very friendly and helpful staff. They served us some excellent Filipino dinner and afterwards we showed them how happy we were by filling the peaceful resort with some horrible karaoke-singing (which they provide in the dining area). We spent the following morning on Potipot island before continuing with our road trip. Potipot island is a small patch of white-sand in the middle of a small bay on the East side of Luzon facing South China Sea and about a 5-minute boat ride from the Potipot Gateway resort. When I say small, I mean we walked around the island in about 20-30 minutes in “long walks by the beach”-pace.
Potipot Gateway is on a mission to recover and rehabilitate the reefs of Potipot which, like many of the reefs around the Philippines, have been abused and mismanaged. I am confident that these guys will succeed in recovering the reefs and when I return I’ll be seeing a very healthy and diverse underwater environment.
